Frequently Asked Questions

If you’d like more information about anything at all, including any recommendations etc you can contact us via e-mail. Here are some common questions:

Basically, NOTHING! All specialist safety equipment is provided by us. For the gorge and canyon activities you’ll need swimwear, a towel, shoes (no sandals/beach shoes!) and some old loose shorts. You don’t need any prior experience either; our adventures are suitable for everyone. If you’re experienced, drop us an e-mail; we may adjust the trip to suit you.

Each activity has a specific meeting point (most meet near Blaenau Ffestiniog). When you book online you’re automatically sent a PDF with the exact location and activity details, but if you visit our location page you’ll get a good idea in advance. It’s very rare that these locations are subject to change. Basically nothing is too far away in North Wales, but the roads are slow! We’re max 1hr away from virtually the furthest places (except Holyhead on Anglesey!)

Canyon Xtreme has a guide age of 11+ (it’s not suitable for all young people, and we have allowed younger people at our discretion). The Canyon trip is generally age 8/9+ and in very low water we sometimes allow younger. In high water small people need to avoid the slides and abseil (essentially doing the Gorge trip. All other activities (Gorge Scrambling, Rock Climbing, Kayaking & Canoeing) are age 4+! We’ve noticed not all small people (age 4/5) are built the same; some manage the activities easily and where as others find it much more difficult, you’ll need to decide if you think your children will enjoy it, and most children are more capable than you imagine!

If you’ve booked the Canyon or Gorge trips bad weather rarely (if ever) affects our river based adventures; rain often makes it more exciting! Ideally you don’t want rain for rock climbing; we may try and change location or day/time if possible. We won’t cancel/refund unless it’s dangerous which it isn’t, it’s just unpleasant! For kayaking the wind is our worst enemy; again if it’s looking really bad we may try and change day, or even activity. Here are our exact terms and conditions.

If we can’t agree on another day/ activity then we convert your booking to a voucher to use at a later date.

No, same day booking is almost never possible (although you can try in the quiet season, you’ll need to phone us). Once we have left the office at 745am we wont have any of the correct equipment for you. Booking last minute the day before is possible (although you’ll need verbal confirmation from us that the trip is going ahead; you have to phone) but we’re fully booked most weekends and during school holidays. To avoid disappointment, book as far in advance as you can. We (George and Rachel) personally run the trips so availability is strictly limited; the online system can go from available to fully booked in 1 booking.

Do Your Own REsearch!!!
Do Your Research!

The adventure activities industry in the UK is not regulated by law. This means that just because a company appears to be operating legitimately does not necessarily mean they have qualified and experienced guides, and even worse, may not have a valid insurance policy. Whoever you choose as a business/guide, it’s up to you to make sure they’re legit, they have an appropriate insurance policy and their staff are experienced and hold the appropriate qualifications.

Insurance

All participants are covered for public liability and negligence on the part of the company for up to £5’000’000. Should you wish to be covered for personal accident and injury (recommended), you must take out your own holiday insurance.

Qualifications

For more information on the qualifications we hold and our professional affiliations (including the BMC, BCA, AMI, BCU, BSA UKCC and British Cycling), please drop us and e-mail and we’ll be happy to send details.

Licensed

We do not allow unaccompanied children on any of our adventures. All under 18s must be accompanied by a paying and participating parent/ legal guardian (there’s no max child:adult ratio). We are not ALLA registered and this is a legal requirement for anyone running these types of session.
